Alabama
The Society of St. Andrew has delivered a total of 9.1
million pounds of salvaged potatoes and other food to the needy in Alabama
through the Potato Project. This has resulted in approximately 27.3
million servings of food going to Alabama's hungry.
Gleaning in Alabama
The Society of St. Andrew operates a volunteer-driven
Gleaning Network in Alabama that coordinates with local farmers, hundreds
of volunteers, and food providing agencies. The Alabama Gleaning Network
includes hundreds of volunteers who save millions of pounds of fresh
produce every year and use it to feed hungry people all across the state.
Through the Alabama Gleaning Network, we coordinate volunteers in many
areas of the state who actually enter fields after farmers have finished
harvesting and simply pick up the tons of good produce left behind. Our
volunteers represent groups from various church denominations, synagogues,
youth groups, other civic organizations, individuals, and inner city
residents.
Each year we coordinate hundreds of volunteers to glean
nearly hundreds of thousands of pounds of a variety of produce in Alabama.
Please join us in this exciting hands-on ministry.
The Regional Office in Birmingham coordinates gleaning throughout the
state in conjunction with the Hunger Relief Advocate office located in
Pensacola, Florida that covers the southern portion of Alabama and West
Florida.
