Humble
Read: Philippians 2:5-11
Let’s face it: we Christians can often come across as arrogant to
non-Christians. But let me turn that into a personal confession: I can
be very arrogant. After all, I am a child of God! I am a disciple of
Jesus Christ! I have been saved by God’s grace through my faith in
Christ! Why can’t everyone be like me? The world would be so much better
if everyone was like me! Gee, that is a little arrogant, isn’t it? This
is undoubtedly part of the reason that the great Mahatma Gandhi said: “I
like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so
unlike your Christ.” What was Christ like? What is it that is most
fundamentally missing in me that is so much a part of Christ? I think
the answer resides in this passage from Philippians. We must, as Christ
did, “do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit” (a difficult thing
for modern Americans), “but in humility regard others as better than
(ourselves).” The apostle continues, telling us that Jesus was
constitutionally humble, having humbled himself “to the point of
death—even death on a cross.” Jesus’ humility is a beacon of light for
me. It calls me to be more deeply humble and obedient to God.
Prayer:
Gracious God: you highly exalted Jesus and gave him the name that is
above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord, to your great glory. Amen
