“Harvest of Hope” gleaning and
worship being featured on
“America At Worship” TV show
Original broadcast date
changed to December 19, 2004
Big Island, VA – “Harvest of Hope is the best all around
mission experience for youth, “said Shawn Kiger, director of the Society
of St. Andrew’s Harvest of Hope mission retreat program. “To have the
opportunity to share that with a national audience is very exciting.”
Kiger is referring to the Faith & Values Media television program,
“America At Worship,” which is seen every Sunday from 9am to noon on the
Hallmark Channel. The three-hour program is known for great preaching,
inspirational music, and insightful reflections.
On December 19, the fourth Sunday of Advent, the program will include a
4-minute segment about youth at work and worship during a Harvest of
Hope event held in July on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Originally, the
segment was to be shown on December 5. In noting the change in
scheduling, Jim Melchiorre, producer of the Harvest of Hope segment,
said, “America At Worship’s viewership is usually higher the closer we
get to Christmas.”
“America At Worship” also features stories about how people live out
their faith,” Melchiorre explained. “When I learned about the Harvest of
Hope program operated by the Society of St. Andrew, I had a hunch it
would be perfect for our program’s Ways We Worship segment. My hunches
aren’t always on target,” he admitted, “but this one was. I’m quite
impressed with the way the Society of St. Andrew has found a mission –
ending hunger – and stayed committed to it for a quarter-century,
finding a variety of creative ways to involve people and still remain
focused on the goal.”
Participants in Harvest of Hope mission retreats glean food for local
agencies, learn about the problem of hunger, worship and fellowship
together. 58 teenagers and 24 adult advisors and leaders attended the
event filmed for the America At Worship segment. “When cameras are
around there’s always the chance that kids will become extremely shy or
ham-it-up,” commented Kiger, “but they were very natural.” Melchiorre
said, “The energy and enthusiasm of the teenage participants really
impressed me!”
Watch for the Harvest of Hope segment on America At Worship on the
Hallmark Channel, Sunday, December 19, from 9am to noon.
