Gleaning America's Fields ~ Feeding America's Hungry

 

 

 

We have linked a number of short video productions - most of which have been uploaded by groups working with SoSA. All these volunteers worked to provide food to food banks, shelters, and other agencies that feed the hungry and the poor with good, nutritious food plucked from the fields.

May 1, 2012 - Three videos document the cucumber Produce Drop held at the United Methodist General Conference in Tampa, Florida.
April 2012 - Linda Tozer and Tonia Anderson appear on the morning program on WREG, Channel 3 in Memphis. This is from late April 2012.

February 9, 2012 - a Fox News, Tampa Bay story of Florida Southern students in Lakeland gleaning oranges. Although the story says the group picked 53 bags, they actually picked 483 bags! And the "volunteer" Margie Lewis is actually our West Central Florida Area Coordinator. (runs 1:35)

December 31, 2011 - Barbara Sayles, or our Orlando office, is seen in this Fox News report on the 32nd annual Fresh From Florida Parade. SoSA distributed the fruit used on the floats. (runs 1:50)

November 18, 2011 - This video was produced by Amy Simpson and Jennifer Kopf as part of Lance Speere's converged journalism class at University of Central Florida in Fall 2011. (runs 2:33)

November 18, 2011 - The segment on the North Carolina Yam Jam 2011 was released by UNC-TV as part of its North Carolina Now program. Features Kristy Nash, Glenda Woodard, and Rev. Paul Toombs.  (runs 4 minutes)

November 2, 2011 - The SoSA West office is featured in this 1-minute piece on the NBC-TV affiliate in Kansas City

November 1, 2011 - The SoSA West office releases a new video showing the work of SoSA as it expands Westward.  (runs 3 minutes)

October 23, 2011 - The Lebanon Daily News covers the Harvest for the Hungry in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania  (runs 2-minutes)

September 9, 2011 - Fox 4 News in Kansas City MO covers an 11-church Potato Drop. SoSA West Director Lisa Ousley is interviewed.  (runs 2:10)

September 9, 2011 - The NBC station in KC MO covers the same event as above.  (runs :40)

August 31, 2011 - A sweet potato drop at John Wesley UMC in Pinopolis SC is covered by the Charleston Post & Courier.  (runs 1:13)

August 13 2011 - The Watermelon Crawl is covered by Fox 16 in Little Rock AR. Jackie Usey of the Mississippi office is there with SoSA volunteers.

July 2011 - The Salisbury (NC) Post writes a story about tomato gleaning in Gold Hill NC and produces this set of video interviews  (runs 2:05)

Spring 2011 - "The Gleaning Project" Citrus gleaning by First United Methodist Church of Titusville, Florida (runs 8 minutes)

January 2011 - A slideshow about gleaning, produced by Tennessee Region Office Director Lynette Johnson.  (runs 3:08)

December 2010 - The Alpha Zeta Fraternity (a national agriculture fraternity) worked with the Florida regional office of Society of St. Andrew to hold a 4-day mission trip.  (runs 6:57)

December 2010 - Fox 21/27 did a feature with Virginia Gleaning Coordinator Sarah Ramey while gleaning a turnip field in Riner, Virginia.  (runs 3:12)

November 2010 - People from Covenant Presbyterian Church and Christ Episcopal Church in Charlotte gleaned at Riverbend Farm in Midland NC. The turnips became part of trays distributed by Charlotte-Mecklenburg's primary meals-on-wheels program.

PSA: Society of St. Andrew - a 30-second public service announcement created in 2008.

October 2010 - Youth groups convened in Sedalia, Mo. for the 2010 Festival of Sharing to unload and distribute 42,000 pounds of potatoes to fight hunger in America.  (runs 2:13)

Winthrop University Students bagged 41,000 pounds of potatoes to distribute to local agencies who help feed the hungry.  (runs :54)

Foodbank Central Florida works with Society of St. Andrew to glean vegetables for Feeding America.  (runs 1:27)

Gleaning in Northwest Ohio - The Center of Innovative Food Technology and the Society of St. Andrew team up to help farmers glean the fields or collect surplus to give to those in need. (runs 2:33)

Christ Lutheran Church of Cape Coral FL, with the Society of St. Andrew, feeds the hungry with leftover potatoes from the fields.(runs 2:42)

It was Saturday, and yet CNL Associates were hard at work, not in the office, but out on the Zellwood farm. CNL volunteers teamed up with the Society of St. Andrew to do a little Gleaning. (runs 2:28)
